Popcaan Channels Jamaica’s Resilience on “Carrying It Home” After Hurricane Melissa

December 4, 2025

Popcaan — born Andre Sutherland in Portmore — has channeled his homeland’s pain and resilience into “Carrying It Home,” one of the most emotionally resonant dancehall songs to emerge from the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa. The Damage Musiq production features Popcaan declaring his unyielding ambition, referencing Chronic Law’s legal troubles abroad: “Glad say dem free me bredda 1Law.” His 2025 NPR Tiny Desk performance was widely praised as one of the year’s finest musical moments, showcasing a range that surprised mainstream audiences. Despite ongoing visa complications preventing US performances, Popcaan remains one of the genre’s most internationally recognized names through major collaborations with Drake and other hip-hop heavyweights.
