The Disciples were given their name by legendary sound system operator Jah Shaka in 1986 and along with their Boomshackalacka Sound System and label, have had a major influence on UK roots and dub in the last decade.

Their first release came about after Jah Shaka asked them for dub-plate cuts of tunes they had taken down to his shop to play him. This led to their first LP release "Deliverance-Commandments Of Dub Chapter 6", which Jah Shaka put out on his own Shaka label.

This was a great start for Russ and Lol, the two brothers who then made up The Disciples, and they went on to release three more albums on Shaka's label. Around this time Lol started a fanzine which he called Boom-Shacka-Lacka after a classic late 60's rocksteady tune by Hopeton Lewis. Rootsman contacted the magazine after getting a copy of the first issue, and subsequently met Lol and Russ and began to write for the magazine.

The brothers also built up their own massive sound system which they also called Boomshackalacka. They played out across the country including many nights at Rootsman's Dub Me Crazy sessions in Bradford.

Since then they have been releasing music regularly, both on their Boomshackalacka and Backyard Movements labels and with various other record companies.

The Disciples provided the music and mixdowns of Dayjah's two albums released on Third Eye Studio, and both of these sets were recorded at the Disciples studio in London.

Rootsman also cemented his connection with Russ, with the collaboration set "Rebirth" (recorded at the Third Eye studio) which appeared in 1997 and was a strong UK dub seller at the time. Other tracks produced by Rootsman and The Disciples are presently unreleased.
