Crissy D

Crissy D was born Dawnette Angelita Nevers 26 years ago in Jubilee Hospital, Kingston, Jamaica. She was raised in Kingston, living in Hope Pastures and then Meadow Brook. The alias Crissy D came along 6 years ago when the Mainstreet Crew was forming and they wanted names for all the artists in the crew. Crissy recalls, "They used to call me 'cutie' or 'brownin'. In Jamaica if they think you're nice (you're) a criss girl. That's how the Crissy came by and the D is for Dawnette".

Alongside <a href="http://www.bigupradio.com/artistDetail.jsp?aid=520">Lady G </a>, Crissy had a big Garage hit in the UK with the tune 'Girls Like Us' on Oracabessa Records . Although it was originally a Reggae song, she believes "it went out better that way" as there was no sense remixing the tune back to Reggae after it was such a successful Garage track. She has done a number of tunes which were not cover versions including 'Hot Gal', 'Provide The Wine' with Lady G, 'No Live Nowhere' and 'Big Timer'. 
 
Being a singer has its ups and downs and Crissy enjoys the feeling of achievement in her work even though sometimes she doesn't feel like she's working. The awards reinforce how well she is doing and she also has a contract with the big furniture store, Courts , in Jamaica, of which she is a promoter alongside <a href="http://www.bigupradio.com/artistDetail.jsp?aid=287">Beenie Man</a>. She also says that when she goes to some countries such as Surinam "companies want to sign me". At present Crissy is not signed to a record label. 
 
On the flip side she says, "I don't see the money, all de money dat I suppose to see". She also dislikes a number of other things including, "This trend of this one riddim and is a lotta artists on one riddim". She prefers to be unique and tries not to do her songs on the same riddms as everyone else "like <a href="http://www.bigupradio.com/artistDetail.jsp?aid=2723">Judy Mowatt </a> an you know those singers that stick out because they have dem own". 
 
Being in the Mainstreet Crew previously, means that Crissy has worked with <a href="http://www.bigupradio.com/artistDetail.jsp?aid=374">Red Rat </a>, but she has also worked with Lady G, <a href="http://www.bigupradio.com/artistDetail.jsp?aid=1184">General Degree</a>, Beenie Man and some Japanese artists. In addition, she has worked with producers <a href="http://www.bigupradio.com/labelDetail.jsp?lid=275">Steely & Clevie</a>, <a href="http://www.bigupradio.com/artistDetail.jsp?aid=2441">Sly & Robbie</a>, Danny Browne and the B15 Crew .
