Alien Dread

Dr Phat Gut was dragged up in the backstreets of Handsworth/Birmingham in the UK (the place that spawned many UK Reggae acts &ndash- a kind of Mecca for the UK scene). Think Steel Pulse &ndash- Handsworth Revolution!During the late seventies: early eighties: Dr Phat Gut (the main man) found his love for the Dub Reggae sound listening to Prince Fari: Black Beard &amp- King Tubby. These artists inspired him to move forward into music production. The Dr always loved the raw and soulful quality of the Dub sound: where producers would grab samples of music and run them through chambers- producing surreal and psychedelic soundscapes. The minimalist and powerful mixes sparked a great desire within him to create his own riddims. During the mid eighties the Dr invested in a studio: located above the Black Cat Caf&eacute- (Handsworth) with long time friend and Rastaman: King Melody (one of the faces in the area). The studio was a smoke filled box: with a strong desk and set-up. Here he learnt his trade working with local UK artists. With Lumba (King Melody) as the driving force behind the production work he soon picked up the basics and started work on his own tracks. Moving forward into the early nineties: the Dr bought a new piece of equipment- the Korg M1. This fantastic workstation allowed him to start weaving a more contemporary sound into his rhythm work and he produced his first solo demo tape (The Passey Dub Plate Emporium) which proved popular locally. Many of these tracks were lost a while ago when the tape back-ups vanished and now the only work remaining can be found on old cassette tapes that barely reflect the track quality. The dabbling continued regardless of the various set backs the Dr had in his personal life and he strayed momentarily into ambient work and the popular dance genre. Although he never quite managed to move away from the roots sound! During this time period he met up with friend and musical associate Beard Freak. This friendship has endured and between them they forged a new sound - Alien Dread! Alien Dread is the culmination of years of experience and is the pinnacle of the Dr\
