Gilbert spent his youth singing in church with his brother Robert and was always involved in plays and pantomimes - either acting or singing. It was not until 1989 when Gilbert moved to Montego Bay and met Ed Robinson: a producer with recording studio Tiff Tam that he started to experience the real world of music. During that period he would see Andrew Thomas: ET Webster: Benji Meyers: and Ritchie Stevens just to name a few recording at the studio. He also became associated with most of the musicians: producers and artists’ managers in western Jamaica. During that time Ed Robinson was the only producer in Montego Bay with a professional recording studio: which for the next 5 years became a second home for Gilbert . In 1992 Gilbert met Eddie Murphy and Eddie’s co-producer Trenton Gumbs. Trenton was very impressed with Gilbert and the two soon collaborated to produce the group ‘The Jamaican Special’ - a Jamaican Version of the American duo Kriss Kross. Gilbert founded the duo in Montego Bay and was very impressed with their individual uncut talent. He then got the two together to perform and began writing their lyrics. With the help of producer Trent Gumbs: Desmond Gumbs they requested that Joy Bailey (A&R for Capitol Records) fly to Jamaica to see the duo. Joy was so impressed with ‘The Jamaican Special’s that Jean Riggins: vice president of black entertainment for Capitol records: signed them to Capitol records immediately...Makes them the youngest and the first Jamaican Duo ever sign to a major recording company. After three years of writing and road managing and traveling back and forth Between New York: Los Angeles: and Jamaica with the Jamaican Special: Gilbert decided to write and Produce for other acts that’s when he founded The Hurricane Gilbert Group. Wicker Worker: Black Lion: and Steve Flex Little Sam: Blanco he had engineer Andrew Thomas Also engineer and Producer Paul Hussey: who had work with him in Jamaica and Los Angeles with the Jamaican Special: group to make the demo. About the same time: Nelson Clark heard the demo in Jamaica and took it to his friend David Garcia in San Jose CA. Rockstone Productions was found three month later and sign the group to a four year contract. In 1996 Gilbert went to London to meet with Mr. Palmer from Jet Star Records. The meeting was a success. Gilbert soon returned to Jamaica with the intention of recording his debut album. He went to CRS studios in Jamaica where Paul Hussey recorded his first song Jamaica No Problem.
