Soul Majestic

West Coast based, nationally touring roots reggae band, Soul Majestic, was formed in the late 1990's by lead singer and songwriter, Eric Iverson (a.k.a. Eric-I) who joined forces with singer Oriana Sanders, guitarist David Lyons, and percussionist Brian Jarvis. Soul Majestic has strong roots in the local Santa Cruz and Bay Area music scene where they first introduced their music to the world. As contributors to the thriving evolution of California reggae, Soul Majestic has aligned themselves with and been welcomed by the most respected in the business – recording their second album at the legendary Tuff Gong Studio with some of the best artists Jamaica has to offer, touring nationally with world-renowned reggae greats and performing at some of the largest attended festivals in the US including Reggae on the River, Ragga Muffins, Earthdance, and Sierra Nevada World Music Festival to name just a few.

Soul Majestic’s modern take on this time-honored genre has critics proclaiming, “In this day and age of fading reggae stars and half-ass efforts by one-time legends, Soul Majestic delivers an invigorating and full-tilt ass-shaking show that simultaneously reminds you of the power of the Jamaican sound and proves that good reggae is far from dead.” (Santa Barbara Independent, 2007). Their unique blend of Caribbean style reggae rhythms cross-pollinated with their original songwriting style, which fuses their influences of rock, jazz, world, classical, and hip hop, is a perfect vehicle to deliver the universal message of their music, incorporating such topics as the protection of our environment, political, social and economic concerns, family, life and love. The band’s talented musicianship, along with fresh lyrics delivered by the dynamic male/female lead vocals of Eric-I (Eric Iverson) and Oriana (Oriana Sanders), sets the stage for a guaranteed uplifting experience that will remind you of the importance of togetherness, and leave you with some extra magic to carry home.

Over the years Soul Majestic’s sound has been cultivated and shaped by a cast of quality and influential roots musicians who have added special touches to the bass and drum, lush background harmonies, dynamic keyboard sounds and at times live horns to ultimately produce an irresistible sound all their own. They've shared the stage and worked with many of reggae's greatest and continue to put on dynamic live performances prompting Chuck Foster from Beat Magazine to say "they are poised to inherit the top US reggae band mantle.....".

In 2004 Soul Majestic recorded their second album, Until That Day, at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong recording studios in Kingston, Jamaica. While recording, the band lived for 6 weeks in a house in the ghetto community of Bridgeport where they got a chance to see and experience the ‘real Jamaica’ far from the sparkling sands of the resorts. They mingled with the residents at local soundsystem gatherings and soaked up the culture, getting a feel for the pulse of modern Jamaican youth. This experience combined with recording at Bob Marley’s legendary studio was like going to school for the band. Playing on instruments that Bob and the Wailers had played on, under the tutelage of people that pioneered and made reggae music what it is today gave Soul Majestic a new depth that showed through in their recordings. With big hitters Anthony B. and Sly & Robbie collaborating on such tracks as “Stand Up” and “Elder Voice”, dynamic percussion by Sticky Thompson and Bongo Herman, intertwined with a top-notch horns ensemble and super crisp engineering from Chris Miller, Shane Brown, and Soljie Hamilton, Soul Majestic’s second studio album had critics and reggae fans alike taking notice. Infused with distinct Jamaican flavorings that could only come from the authentic talents of the all-star crew they recruited, Until that Day has launched them onto radio playlists as far off as Guam, Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean.

In November 2005 Soul Majestic teamed up with conscious dancehall king Anthony B for a second occasion – this time to tour the US, opening each show while backed by Anthony’s band. The tour was organized in response to the success of the combo track “Stand Up” from the Until That Day album. The Stand Up Tour reached reggae lovers all over every major city in California, Oregon and Washington as they plowed through fourteen shows in as many nights! January 2006 kicked off the next leg of the tour, which carried them from coast to coast hitting over forty-five cities in the Southwest, Midwest, East Coast and Hawaii. (See the touring roster for more details.)

The band is currently in the studio with producer Seth Theodore of Million 7 Sounds, completing their third album entitled “Forward”, to be released this summer, 2007, so check the web site for details as they arise!
