A humble Rastaman whose short career was persistently dogged by rumour and ill-health, he was born Garnett Smith in Manchester, Jamaica in 1966, dee-jaying as Little Bimbo from the age of 12 on local sound-systems. Together with his friend Tony Rebel he moved to Kingston and joined Sugar Minott's Youth Promotion in 1987, also recording for King Jammys, Bunny Lee and the late King Tubbys in the early stages of his career. Soon afterwards he was to become a singer and was renamed Garnett Silk by Steely & Clevie, who recorded him throughout 1990.

The late Garnett Silk is already a legend in reggae circles, and has been widely credited with re-introducing roots and cultural themes into modern dancehall music.
