Jimmy Cliff Passes Away at 79 — Reggae Icon and Grammy Legend Mourned Worldwide

The reggae world mourns the passing of Jimmy Cliff on November 24, 2025, due to a seizure followed by pneumonia. He was 79. Born James Chambers in Somerton, Saint James, Jamaica, Cliff was one of the most iconic figures in Jamaican music history and the first living artist to receive the Order of Merit from the Jamaican government. His international breakthrough came with the 1972 film The Harder They Come, starring in the film and contributing the iconic soundtrack. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 and won two Grammy Awards during his career spanning five decades. A celebration of life concert is being planned in Kingston for February 2026 as part of Reggae Month commemorations.
