Della Grant is one roots reggae singer that needs no introduction to serious roots reggae music fans. She has been keepin’ it locked since her debut Album “Arrival” was released in 1988. Della began singing in her church choir in Savannah Georgia at age six. She has carried a strong Roots and Culture Message throughout her career and that is just as evident in her latest release, “Precious Memories”
Della is accompanied by her husband/producer, Ralston Grant, along with Norman Grant of the Twinkle Brothers lending their Rasta family vibes that is present in all of their works. There are also two songs featuring Colour Red, singing along side Della: “Dance Dance” and “Dance Hall Jam.” With the twinkle riddim section doing their part, and Della with her heartical lyrics and her undeniably talented vocals, they have created a solid example of Modern Roots Reggae.
As with all of Della’s music she is always defending truth and rights, and spreading Jah’s message. In song s like “Nah lef Mi Roots”, Della proclaims “the little that they have lord is just for a time” and hearing these words brings the listener comfort in these serious times.
The song I love Jah Jah also carries an uplifting message of love of the almighty creator, and confirms her spiritual faith. Track 5, is a tribute to the great selector, and itinual sound champion, Jah Shaka, a close friend of the Twinkle Camp. Her song, “Voice of the sufferer”, is really the one that stands out to me as a song of hope. Let us not forget the meek, and Della communicates this point eloquently.
What I also enjoy hearing when I listen to Della Grant’s music is her friends and family that help to build the vibes that is unique to her music. As you can see from the cover of “Precious Memories” (early photos), family is an integral part of Della’s music. I always enjoy hearing Dub Judah, and Black Steel, Ralston, Norman and all of their contributions to her songs.
Along with her husband, Ralston’s band, the Twinkle Brothers, Della’s musical vibes have a hola presence and an upfull movement in inity. This is apparent in all her studio works and especially her live performances. Della Grant’s “Precious Memories” is a treasure to be shared with your family and close friends. Jah Live!
