Studio One

Studio One — founded by Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in Kingston, Jamaica in 1963 — is the most historically significant label in Jamaican music. Often called the Motown of Jamaica, Studio One was the training ground for Bob Marley and The Wailers, Toots and the Maytals, Burning Spear, Freddie McGregor, Dennis Brown, and dozens of others. The label's distinctive sound — created at the legendary studio at 13 Brentford Road — defined the transition from ska to rocksteady to early reggae, and its catalog remains the foundation on which all subsequent Jamaican popular music has been built.
