Internationally renowned female vocalist and songwriter, Marcia Griffiths, was born in West Kingston in 1954, where she grew up with her two sisters and brother. It was at the tender age of 10, that young Marcia's voice was to be recognized by veteran producers such as Sir Clement Dodd and Byron Lee. Today, Marcia, a former member of Bob Marley's I- threes back-up trio, has made a name for herself outside of this trio, as a successful artiste who has delved into all genres of music over the years.
Working with Sir Clement Dodd at Studio One, Griffiths received her first number one hit in 1968 for the song, Feel like Jumping, a song that still moves its listeners towards the dance floor. Her Electric Boogie , recorded with Bunny Wailer became a major hit in America in 1989 a few years after it was recorded. This song gave way to the dance known to us as The Electric Slide . Other songs written by this singing sensation include, Stepping Out of Babylon, Truly and Melody Life.
Following her recent achievement, the United Nations Great Esteem Award, we thought it a must to have her share her glee with her anxious and proud fans and patriots. In an interview with the singing sensation, conducted on the phone just before she left Jamaica for yet another event, when asked to comment on the award, she commended other Caribbean islands on their involvement. She also noted that Beverley Manley was honoured as well as other special awardees. In her gracious style, she described the event as a wonderful moment in time, which was in perfect timing with her 40th anniversary in the music business. Griffths was overwhelmed as she explained that this was recognition for her hard work over the decades.
